This has been a great week in our homeschooling adventure. We are thoroughly enjoying all of the wonderful books in Heart of Dakota and DITHOR! We are truly blessed, and God is good all the time!
Our focus this week has been the Israelites, Assyria and Babylon. We have travelled the incredible journey as we read from Grandpa's Box, A Child's History of the World, and the Books of I and II Kings, Chronicles and Jeremiah from our Bibles.
We read about King Sennacerib of Assyria, and King Hezekiah of Judah. We learned about the prophets Jeremiah, Isaiah and Jonah. Assyria began conquering all of the nations around them. King Hezekiah of Judah prayed to God, and God answered! God delivered Judah in an amazing way! It also became clear why Jonah really didn't want to go to Ninevah, yet the Lord used Jonah to help the Ninevites repent. When God's chosen people refused to listen to Him, He allowed them to be captured. God had warned them over and over, yet they still did not follow His warnings. Ultimately, Israel was captured by the Assyrians, and Judah was captured by the Babylonians.
Our history project of the week was to make a scroll! Caterpillar copied 2 Kings 19:32-34 onto parchment paper and made his scroll. It came out great!
I also printed out a copy of the poem The Destruction of Sennacherib by Lord Byron for us to read. This was a great connection through poetry to the story of Sennacherib!
In Draw and Write through History, Caterpillar did some copywork about Jonah and the Ninevites, as well as draw a picture of a whale.

The Hanging Gardens
King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, made the city strong by building walls as high as fifty men and so broad a chariot could be driven along the top. He could not find a beautiful wife in Babylon, so he went to Media in search for her. His wife became homesick as she missed the wild mountain scenery of Media. King Nebuchadnezzar built magnificent hills on his palace roof. On the side of the hills were planted beuatiful gardens full of colorful flowers and trees. These were called The Hanging Gardens, and known far and wide as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
Throughout history, men have tried to destroy God's Word, yet He has preserved it for us to read today. In history stories, there are often some inaccuracies. But God's word is inerrant, as it has been God inspired and preserved by Him for accuracy.
Caterpillar has really been enjoying The Great Dinosaur Mystery and the Bible. In science we have learned many interesting biblical facts about dinosaurs and fossils. After the flood, seven of ten spots on the earth remain under water today. Earthquakes and volcanos continued to plague animals and man. Temperatures became more extreme, with hot deserts and frigid ice cold lands. Many animals have become extinct as a result of man's foolishness and changes in the environment. However, Genesis 9:9-17 tells of God's covenant with every living thing that He would never flood the earth again. He sent a rainbow as a reminder of His faithful promise!
