The Jesse Tree

Today marks the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a season of preparation before Christmas. Our family has enjoyed the tradition of decorating a Jesse Tree and reading the story of the incarnation of Christ. This little devotional, The Jesse Tree: Stories and Symbols of Advent has become a wonderful tradition for us.  A Jesse Tree is a kind of family tree as suggested by Isaiah's prophecy.

"A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse."
                                                                      Isaiah 11:1

We make our own tree each year, and decorate it with a symbol per day, after our devotional time. This time each day, is a wonderful reminder of the reason we celebrate the Christmas season in our family! The birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Here is a picture of our Jesse Tree. I will post more pictures as we celebrate this Advent season.

We will also be reading this book, Jotham's Journey: A Storybook for Advent by Arnold Ytreeide, during our family devotions. We have not read it before, yet have heard wonderful reviews. I am looking forward to it!

Bedtime is always a favorite time for stories in our house, and what a wonderful book to read as we snuggle at the end of a day. Caterpillar and I read this last year, and he is looking forward to reading it again! The Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean is another wonderful Christmas tradition!

What are some of your favorite Advent and Christmas season traditions? Please share with us!
