This week's focus in Heart of Dakota was about Israel's worship of idols. Caterpillar and I shared many great discussions about idol worship and trusting in our one true God! After Solomon, the kings of Israel led the people in idol worship. When King Ahab married Jezebel, she brought the idol worship of Baal to Israel from the neighboring kingdom Phoenicia. King Ahab wanted to go to war with king Aram of Syria. He asked Jehoshaphat, king of Judah to help him. Jehoshaphat wanted to consult an Israelite prophet, Micaiah. Ahab did not like what he heard from the prophet and did not listen. God still prevailed, and king Ahab was killed. King Ahab, and all the kings of Israel were evil. Judah had some good, and some bad kings. God eventually punished both Israel and Judah for idol worship.
Caterpillar's written narration assignment this week was from the story of Queen Athaliah.
A Failing Plot
In Israel, Athaliah tried to destroy king David's family line so the promised baby could not come. When Jehosheba realized her mother was killing her own grandchildren she saved one. Jehoiada and Jehosheba saved baby Joash, and kept him hidden in the temple. When Joash turned seven years old, Jehoiada placed a crown on his head and announced that he was the new king.
Our timeline addition this week was of Elijah, the Old Testament prophet who abolished the idol worship of Baal through a contest of fire.
In Draw and Write Through History, Caterpillar drew a Phoenician Ship. He remembered reading about king Ahab's wife, Jezebel, coming from Phoenicia and bringing idol worship of Baal to Israel. He is really enjoying learning to draw through history!
Our science lessons this week took us through the Biblical timeline of Noah's flood, and how Christian scientists believed dinosaurs became extinct. We also learned how plants and animals were quickly fossilized from the layers of muddy earth after the flood. We are thoroughly enjoying reading and learning about Dinosaurs!

We studied a bit about the Phoenicians this week. The history project was a Phoenician game board. Lots of fun.
