Enrichment Fridays

DITHOR: Drawn Into the Heart of Reading.

This particular reading program is part of our weekly studies, yet I thought I would share about it, as it has been somewhat of an enrichment for us as well. We will be studying 5 different genres of literature this year. We have just completed our first genre, a Biography study. The book chosen was Jed Smith: Trailblazer of the West.

I have to admit that I believe I enjoyed this book as much as Caterpillar! It was an incredible story of a godly man's life, Jed Smith, exploring the Wild West, filling in 'white' spaces on the map. At the end of each genre study are various project suggestions. I have tweaked them a little and came up with some of my own ideas. We will be creating a Literature Pocket for each book read. In this pocket we designed a story quilt, a t-shirt for the main character, and some journal pages. Also were a book profile, character bag of important things, and a list of values. We were able to discuss the various character qualities of different characters, as well as the importance of Godly character and responsibility. We are thoroughly enjoying DITHOR!

We need to talk because I'm struggling with DITHOR. Lydia wants to fly through the books. She basically sat down and read 8 Trailblazer books in a row. And we want more "crafty" activities.

I wish I could have bought the Book Project book that went with DITHOR. In the last few days I've considered just buying a Literature Pockets book from the school supply but it won't have the great character stuff that DITHOR has... Grrrr..
