All About Spelling

Another new addition to our homeschool curriculum this year is All About Spelling. I cannot say enough about this program. Let me explain.
Caterpillar is a natural speller. Since the age of 6 months we have read. Since the age of 4 he has been reading and learning to write and spell. He has learned the Orton-Gillingham phonograms forwards and backwards, inside and out. All of this has come fairly easily for him. And best of all, HE LOVES TO READ! What does this have to do with spelling, you might ask?

Since these have come naturally, he has wondered "Why do I have to practice spelling?" We have used workbook type curriculum where he would practice a said list for a week. Pretests on Mondays. Fill in the blank. Multiple choice. Matching. Final Tests on Fridays. You get the picture. He was frustrated, and BORED!

Then I found All About Spelling!

This curriculum reinforces all of the Orton-Gillingham phonograms he has learned, yet also incorporates the rules or 'key cards' to go along with them. Once the rules are mastered, they are then retained to apply them in any writing or reading situation. There are letter tiles. We practice and play on a magnetic board. Then we practice through dictation of words, phrases and sentences. This process has helped develop the ability to apply the rules and phonograms to many, many words. Not just a memorized list. And we are having fun!

1. Would this work with a child who was NOT a good speller? Say, Ryan, who doesn't even try to sound out the word and wants to spell help as hlpe or some other crazy way??

2. How much time does it take in your day?

I'm so frustrated with my son right now when it comes to spelling. Even thought we did a phonics program he falls back on sight reading & his writing sooo reflects this.

Daisy,
I have read that this works great for those that have difficulty spelling too. It teaches the why's and when's of spelling. For example the /k/ sound.... when to use c, k or ck!
At first it took about 20 minutes or so... once we got the swing of the program... 15 minutes, some days 10 minutes. You work on one step until it is completed. HTH!
