At the time, I had no idea God was going to start revealing pieces of an amazing puzzle to us. I just knew that my sweet Caterpillar was an ALL BOY three year old. He was very bright, and knew all of that preschool stuff anyway. He was counting way beyond twenty, knew his colors, shapes, sizes and all of the alphabet. I had been singing lullabys and nursery rhymes to him since he was an infant. We read stories and looked at picture books since he was old enough to sit up on his own at the age of six months. So we did 'preschool' stuff at home. We played with letters, numbers, colors and shapes. We colored and completed puzzles. We played games, used finger paints, and loved playdoh! Caterpillar was funny though. After just a few short minutes of finger painting, that was it. He had had enough, and didn't like his little fingers messy!
We loved being outside! I was beginning to believe he would sleep outside if I let him! Yet, maybe not. I remember the first time he went barefoot in the grass. I thought he was going to melt from all those tears. He was not mad, or even frustrated... he just didn't know what to think of the feeling of grass. It tickled between those cute little toes, and it just wasn't his personal preference! So, the shoes or sandals were always on outside. He loved the water however, and the sprinkler was always a favorite on hot summer days!
Summer was coming to a close, and we had enrolled him into a private christian school for K4. He had grown so much physically, as well as emotionally, I just prayed he would be ready. I had done alot of research, and met with the teachers and principal several times. There needed to be the assurance of what you see on the outside, also takes place on the inside! His K4 teacher was very sweet, and well seasoned. She calmed my fears by asserting that everything they do is for the love of Christ, and that the children were all very loved, each and every one of them!
I definitely had the first day of school gitters. And it wasn't even me going to school! It was my baby though, my precious Caterpillar. After our preschool experience, I just didn't want a repeat! Caterpillar was only enrolled for the half day program, Monday through Thursday. I must have looked at the clock a hundred and one times between 8:30 am and 11:45am dismissal! My minivan was the first in line, waiting in carpool. It was a very LONG morning! When that curly blonde haired little boy came to the van with a big smile, I knew we were off to a good start! Thank you Jesus!
