Creative Writing: Poetry Style

At the Sea-side

When I was down beside the sea
A wooden spade they gave to me
To dig the sandy shore.

My holes were empty like a cup.
In every hole the sea came up,
Till it could come no more.
Robert Louis Stevenson

With this selection, we discussed rhyme and meter of poetry. We clapped the syllables of each line to learn that the meter is the rhythm or beat of the poem. This was fascinating to Caterpillar, as he loves music! Caterpillar was to write six more lines to the poem, keeping the same meter, and rhyming if possible. We brainstormed about things we could discover at the sea-side using a web organizer. Being visual, this really allowed Caterpillar's creative juices to flow. Here are the lines he wrote:

I watched a bumpy sea star rest.
A crab so briskly sidewinding
With seagulls so playful.

Discovering on the seashore
Pebbles and seashells and driftwood,
Till pockets were so full.
